Good food is one of the great joys in life, and not just eating.  Whipping up a delicious meal or taking those freshly-baked cookies out of the oven can be profoundly fulfilling.   I have loved cooking and baking since I was a child.  Over the years I have worked in restaurants and bakeries, perused cookbooks, experimented and added new techniques.  Throughout university, I adored hosting and attending potlucks and dinner parties, but after graduation my love of travel stole me away from my kitchen… Trying to fit a kitchen in a backpack can be a little tricky.

In 2010, I discovered the world of sailing.  Not only could I travel, I could take my kitchen, now a galley, with me.  Cooking on yachts in the United States, the Bahamas, Mexico, Australia, across the Indian Ocean, and beyond, I have and learned my way around a galley and how much fun cooking on a boat can be.   By no means is cruising a life of hardtack, canned soups, and cutting culinary corners.  Quite the contrary: you can have the freshest fish, crusty bread, and any number of delectable dinners or fabulous feasts at sea.

Cooking on boats is different than cooking on shore, there are challenges, but that doesn’t mean it has to be hard.  You may have to think outside the box sometimes but your culinary creations can be mouthwatering, even a highlight on long passages.

In this blog you’ll find everything from simple recipes for rough seas to more involved ones for in marinas, favorites, tips for cooking at sea, and of course stories, ideas, and inspiration.  And by no means do you have to prepare these recipes in a galley… they are just as tasty on shore.  Well, almost… the sea does tend to build up a hearty appetite.  I hope that you will leave this blog with a taste of my passion for cooking, the cruising life, and come back for second and third helpings…

    I just copied all your recipes and you don’t need any cookbooks I may have been able to offer!

    I love the site! I already found several recipes that I want to try, especially the challah bread, Sato San’s potato salad, and the yummy ginger-peach scones. I will let you know how they turn out. Thanks for visiting the marina, and safe travels!
